SW20 Mk2 · five revisions · four markets

Revision guide.

The SW20 changed five times between 1989 and 1999. The four markets it sold in diverged from Rev 4 onwards; this guide records each spec against its source, with markets called out separately where they actually differ.

01 · Timeline — factory anchored

From JDM launch to JDM-only Rev 5.

Twelve anchor events across the SW20's ten production years. Toyota's own phrasing is included alongside the enthusiast 'Rev' shorthand.

02 · Rev 1 · Introduction

Rev 1 · JDM 1989-12 · UK 1990-04

The original SW20. JDM December 1989, UK April 1990. 3S-GTE Gen 2 turbo for JDM and USDM; 3S-GE NA for JDM and UK; 3S-FE base in UK. Pop-up headlamps, three-piece rear lamps, three-piece rear wing.

Engine, by market

Three engine families across four markets at launch. UK was naturally aspirated only — the country never officially sold a turbo SW20.

Turbo engine
  • JDM 3S-GTE Gen 2 · 225 PS · CT20 turbo · side-mount intercooler · TCCS ECU
  • USDM 3S-GTE · ~200 hp
  • UK not offered
  • Euro not offered

All UK turbo SW20s are JDM grey imports; Toyota UK never officially sold a turbo.

Front brake disc
258 mm × 25/24 mm — vented

The front is vented and substantially thicker than the rear; combined with a larger-piston caliper it does the bulk of the braking despite the slightly smaller diameter (mid-engined weight bias makes the rear disc usable a notch larger by diameter alone).

Toyota UK 1990 launch pack + MR2OC brake FAQ Factory documented

Rear brake disc
263 mm × 16 mm — solid

Solid (non-vented) rotor. Diameter slightly larger than the front to suit the rearward weight bias of the mid-engined chassis; thickness and caliper sizing are smaller than the front.

03 · Rev 2 · First important changes

Rev 2 · JDM 1991-12 · UK 1992-03

The biggest chassis step-change in the SW20's life. Quicker steering, larger brakes, revised geometry, lowered ride height, 15-inch wheels. Toyota UK documents the changes in full in the 1992 revision pack.

04 · Rev 3 · Second important revision

Rev 3 · JDM 1993-11 · UK 1994-03

Biggest visual facelift and most significant engine refresh outside the JDM turbo. JDM gets the 3S-GTE Gen 3 (245 PS, CT20B) — confirmed by the February 1994 Toyota supplement. The USDM continues an updated Gen 2, NOT Gen 3. UK NA jumps from 154 to 173 bhp.

SW20 · Rev 3

Engine — major changes

The single biggest editorial trap on this revision: USDM Rev 3 turbo is updated Gen 2, not Gen 3. The US never received Gen 3 in the SW20.

Turbo engine
  • JDM 3S-GTE Gen 3 · 245 PS · CT20B · revised ECU + new injection
  • USDM 3S-GTE Gen 2 (updated) · ~200 hp — NOT Gen 3

Critical distinction. 'Gen 1 through Gen 4' is community taxonomy; Toyota's docs use supplement chains. SW20 production cars used Gen 2 and Gen 3 only.

NA engine

Stainless MR2-embossed sill plates
Originally factory-fitted to the JDM 10th Anniversary Edition (Feb 1996, Rev 3 spec). Toyota later sold them as a genuine OEM accessory; installation requires modification of the existing plastic door-sill trims. Aftermarket reproductions are widely available.

Often miscategorised as a Rev 4 GT-trim feature — they originate on the Rev 3 Anniversary special. The OEM Toyota part number has not yet been verified to a primary source.

07 · Market summary

Same chassis code, four different cars.

What was sold where. The single most-confused thing about the SW20 is which markets got which engines and which revisions.

Market Turbo Rev 4 Rev 5 Notes
JDM Yes — all revisions Yes Yes Full revision range. Gen 3 turbo from Rev 3. BEAMS 3S-GE in G-Limited Rev 5.
USDM Yes — Rev 1–3 only No No US sales ended 1995. Never received Gen 3 3S-GTE. Rev 3 turbo = updated Gen 2.
UK official No — NA only throughout Partial No All UK turbos are JDM grey imports. 1996 10th Anniversary = Rev 3 spec, not Rev 4.
Euro No — NA only official Yes (Rev 3/4 overlap) No 1996 German brochure confirms 170 PS 3S-GE, driver airbag, ABS.

08 · Editorial traps

The mistakes the community keeps making.

High-risk facts where owners, forums, and even some specialists consistently get it wrong. These are encoded in INSTRUCTIONS.md §7a and enforced on every page that touches engines, revisions or markets.

  • 3S-GTE Gen 1 (ST165) and Gen 4 (Caldina) are NOT in the SW20. SW20 used Gen 2 and Gen 3 only.
  • USDM Rev 3 turbo is updated Gen 2, NOT Gen 3.
  • UK 1996 10th Anniversary special is Rev 3 spec, NOT Rev 4.
  • All UK turbo SW20s are JDM grey imports — UK never officially sold a turbo.
  • Rev 5 was JDM only.
  • Rev 4 vs Rev 5 clear-indicator timing is CONTESTED — do not publish a definitive Rev assignment.
  • 3S-GTE compression ratios per generation are MISSING — no primary source located. Do not publish until OEM manual cited.
