Rev 1
Engine, by market
Three engine families across four markets at launch. UK was naturally aspirated only — the country never officially sold a turbo SW20.

- USDM 3S-GTE · ~200 hp
- UK not offered

The front is vented and substantially thicker than the rear; combined with a larger-piston caliper it does the bulk of the braking despite the slightly smaller diameter (mid-engined weight bias makes the rear disc usable a notch larger by diameter alone).
Toyota UK 1990 launch pack + MR2OC brake FAQ Factory documented
Solid (non-vented) rotor. Diameter slightly larger than the front to suit the rearward weight bias of the mid-engined chassis; thickness and caliper sizing are smaller than the front.

Rev 2 · First important changes
Rev 2 · JDM 1991-12
The biggest chassis step-change in the SW20's life. Quicker steering, larger brakes, revised geometry, lowered ride height, 15-inch wheels. Toyota UK documents the changes in full in the 1992 revision pack.

Both diameter and thickness increased at Rev 2; the front gains substantially more sweep area and cooling capacity than the diameter alone suggests.

Rev 3 · Second important revision
Rev 3 · JDM 1993-11
Biggest visual facelift and most significant engine refresh outside the JDM turbo. JDM gets the 3S-GTE Gen 3 (245 PS, CT20B) — confirmed by the February 1994 Toyota supplement. The USDM continues an updated Gen 2, NOT Gen 3. UK NA jumps from 154 to 173 bhp.
Rev 3
Engine — major changes
The single biggest editorial trap on this revision: USDM Rev 3 turbo is updated Gen 2, not Gen 3. The US never received Gen 3 in the SW20.
- JDM 3S-GTE Gen 3 · 245 PS · CT20B · revised ECU + new injection
- USDM 3S-GTE Gen 2 (updated) · ~200 hp — NOT Gen 3
Critical distinction. 'Gen 1 through Gen 4' is community taxonomy; Toyota's docs use supplement chains. SW20 production cars used Gen 2 and Gen 3 only.

Rev 4 · (JDM-driven, no UK factory bulletin equivalent)
Rev 4 · JDM 1996-06
Least well-documented revision. No Toyota UK factory engineering bulletin equivalent to the 1992 and 1994 packs has been located. Sources: 1996 German brochure (high confidence for Euro), community consensus for JDM. Note: the UK 10th Anniversary special (Feb 1996) is Rev 3 spec, NOT Rev 4 — many UK owners assume otherwise.

Engines
3S-GTE Inline-4 turbo · 1998 cc
The SW20's defining engine in JDM and USDM trim. Two generations appeared in the SW20: Gen 2 (Rev 1–3 plus updated Gen 2 in USDM Rev 3) and Gen 3 (JDM Rev 3 onward). Gen 1 and Gen 4 are community taxonomy for the Celica ST165 and Caldina respectively — neither was used in the SW20.

3S-GE Inline-4 NA · 1998 cc
Naturally-aspirated 2.0 in the SW20 across all markets that didn't get the turbo. Output and spec changed three times across the SW20's life: launch, catalyst-era reduction, then the major Rev 3 revision. The Yamaha-developed BEAMS variant arrived in Rev 5 G-Limited (JDM only).

Second BEAMS revision: dual VVT-i (variable timing on both intake AND exhaust cams), titanium valves, slightly higher compression. SW20 BEAMS production reportedly under 1,000 units — these are rare.

Factory-derivedCommon problems
-
T-bar roof seal leak
Very commonDrips into the cabin around the T-bar seals as the rubber ages. Most owners encounter it. OEM procedure exists in the workshop manual.
OEM manual
-
'Pipes from Hell' — copper coolant pipes above fuel tank
CriticalCopper coolant pipes routed above the fuel tank crack from vibration over time. Toyota revised one side only at Rev 5. Failure leaks coolant onto the fuel tank — fire risk.
Specialist source
-
Cambelt — non-interference but catastrophic if missed
CriticalThe 3S-GTE cambelt is non-interference (valves and pistons do not collide on belt failure) but the engine still strands the car. Service interval and procedure are in the OEM manual.

-
Idle surge / hunting idle
Very commonIdle hunts up and down with no consistent RPM. Multiple causes — TVIS leaks, idle air control valve dirt, vacuum hoses, throttle body. Forum pinned threads cover the diagnostic ladder.
Forum verified
-
TVIS vacuum leaks
Very commonTVIS (Toyota Variable Induction System) actuator and vacuum lines leak as they age, causing rough idle and reduced torque. Common companion to the idle-surge complaint.

-
Rear subframe cracking
Downgraded — community claim onlyOften-repeated forum claim. No Toyota service bulletin has been located. Treat as community-unverified until factory documentation surfaces.
Community unverified
-
Power steering rack leak
CommonSteering rack seals weep, eventually requiring rebuild or replacement.
Forum verified
-
Power steering relay failure
CommonEHPS relay fails intermittently; power steering cuts out, often returning when the relay is tapped or replaced.
Forum verified
-
Distributor O-ring failure
CommonEngine-oil leak from the distributor base O-ring. Cheap part, accessible job. Symptom: oil pooling at the rear of the head.
Specialist source
-
Rocker cover gasket deterioration
CommonGasket weeps oil down the side of the head. Often paired with distributor O-ring.
Specialist source
-
E153 gearbox synchro wear (2nd/3rd)
Common with ageCrunching on 2-to-3 and 3-to-2 shifts. Red Line MT-90 oil change is the conventional first step; rebuild eventually required. Common across the SW20 community as cars cross 100k miles.
